Time to talk - in the car

My mother has said she loved having time in the car with my brothers. She said it was the only place they really could talk. As a mom with sons, I was reminded of this fact yesterday when I drove with my younger son to Dallas and back.

We don’t always get a lot of time together, just the two of us, because when we’re at home – there are all the distractions: Dad and brother, TV, cell phone, homework, friends, sleeping, eating. These distractions take precedence in the rhythm of the day, so that “Do you have lunch money?” is our deepest conversation. I don’t know if this lack of real conversation happens more with boys than girls, or not?

Being in the car for an uninterrupted 45 minutes gave us the chance to talk about how high school is going and what he wants to achieve. He sees sports as a way of getting where he wants – and that is to travel. He wants to know four languages. He would love to live somewhere he could snowboard often. All are great goals and I told him all are attainable just for the fact that he knows what he wants.

What a great kid and what a joy it was to spend some time in the car – really talking – with my son.
