IRVING -- A police officer fatally wounded a 49-year-old man who pointed a BB gun at several officers early Saturday.

Paramedics took Orlando Rodriguez, of Irving, to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he later died, an official with the Dallas County medical examiner’s office said.

Police responded to multiple calls in the 2700 block of West 18th Street about 3:20 a.m. and saw a man carrying a rifle, which was later determined to be a BB gun, according to police.

Police ordered Rodriguez to drop the weapon, but he raised the rifle and turned toward them, and one of the officers shot him, a news release said.

Rodriguez was staying at a friend’s residence Saturday and had gone outside to investigate the cause of some noises that he heard, the release said.

Irving police are investigating the shooting, police said. The name of the officer who fired the shot has not been released.
