Texas added 41,700 jobs in October, with professional and business services, and education and health services leading the way, the Texas Workforce Commission said Friday.

The state’s jobless rate edged up, however, to 8.3 percent in October, from 8.2 percent a month ago. The state continues to fare better than the nation as a whole, which has a 10.2 percent jobless rate.

“In October, the Texas job market regained some lost ground experienced over the past several months, although it is too soon to indicate a trend,” Tom Pauken, the commission chairman, said. “The Texas unemployment rate continued to edge upward as our state continues to feel the effects of the national economic downturn.”

Education and health services added 14,900 jobs, professional and business services 10,800 jobs, and financial activities, 4,500 jobs.

Leisure and hospitality added 2,600 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilities added 2,500 jobs. Construction lost 9,400 jobs.

The statewide numbers are adjusted for seasonal fluctuations.

The Fort Worth-Arlington area’s jobless rate, not seasonally adjusted, stayed the same at 8.3 percent compared to a month ago, and was up from 5.1 percent a year ago.

The area added 3,800 jobs, with government leading the way at 4,700 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilitie, and education and health services adding 500.

Losers included leisure and hospitality, 1,400 jobs; and mining, logging and construction, 500 jobs.
