IRVING -- A police officer checking on a woman fatally shot a Rottweiler that came out of the woman's house and ran at the officer, police reported Thursday.
The officer was also bitten by a teenager inside the house, Irving police spokesman David Tull said. The officer, who has not been identified, had gone to the house in the 400 block of King Richard Street about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday after medical officials called, saying the woman who lived there was on dialysis and had not been seen for a month.Letters in the mailbox had been there for several days, and a neighbor questioned by the officer said he had not seen anyone there for days."The officer could smell a foul odor coming from the house," Tull said. The officer knocked on doors and windows but got no answer. When she went into the backyard, Tull said, the officer could see the dog inside the house. Someone opened the door, and the dog charged out. The officer fired on the dog.The woman and the two other people in the house went to the front yard where a teenager who was in the house threatened a neighbor, and the officer separated them, Tull said. The teenager bit the officer when she tried to restrain her from screaming at the neighbor. No one has been arrested, and a determination of whether there will be an arrest in the future has not been made, police said. An investigation is continuing, Tull said.Staff writer Mitch Mitchell contributed to this report.DOMINGO RAMIREZ JR. 817-390-7763
