FORT WORTH -- A 2-year-old girl who was walking behind her mother as they crossed a street was seriously injured late Saturday when she was hit by a pickup that drove away from the scene, police said Sunday.

The suspect vehicle was traveling on the street without its headlights on, police said.

The girl, who suffered two broken legs and internal injuries, was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, but her condition was unavailable Sunday.

The accident happened about 11 p.m. Saturday in the 3800 block of North Harding Street in the Diamond Hill-Jarvis neighborhood on the northside.

According to witnesses at the scene, the mother had crossed the street and her daughter was following behind her, police said. At some point, the child was hit by the pickup, police said.

Witnesses described the pickup as a white 1987 to 1993 Ford F150 pickup with an extended-cab and a white camper shell with a blue stripe or section near the top. Witnesses managed to get only a partial license plate number and the last three characters were GR8.

Anyone with information should call Fort Worth police at 817-871-7122.
