Firefighters battled for more than three hours late Sunday and early Monday to control a grass fire that charred about 30 acres in northwest Fort Worth, according to reports.
The fire was reported about 10 p.m. near the intersection of Boat Club Road and Cromwell Marine Creek Road, said Lt. Kent Worley, fire department spokesman.The flames, fanned by strong winds, moved toward two nearby subdivisions, but it was stopped at Robertson Road, north of where it started."They had some smoke in the neighborhood, but no property was actually threatened," Worley said.Fire officials at the scene speculated that a smoldering cigarette may have caused the blaze, although that was not confirmed Monday morning, Worley said.What is clear is that stiff wind fanned the flames, Worley said.Gusts clocked at 35-40 mph were flung into North Texas around 10 p.m. from a line of thunderstorms that stalled southeast of the Metroplex in Ellis and Navarro counties."When the storms collapsed, that sent out a massive outflow boundary which surged northward," said Jason Dunn, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.The was put out at about 1:30 a.m., Worley said.Bill Miller, 817-390-7684
