Joe Axton calls it a bass tournament for the “little man” and not the professional angler but there isn’t anything little about the first-place prize he is promising for a Texas Top Teams bass tournament at Lake Fork June 28-29.

“We are guaranteeing $10,000 for first place, said Axton, owner of Axton’s Bass City Marina where the event will be held. “This tournament is open to anyone, not just the pros like the one that was held here recently. “

The tournament format isn’t like anything anyone has seen before on Lake Fork. During the Saturday, June 28, competition, anglers will be allowed to bring up to five bass to the weighi-ns that are 12 to 16 inches in length with one fish 24 inches or longer allowed under the lake’s slot limit regulations.

The top 15 teams Saturday will advance to Sunday’s “slot-free” finals, in which every bass caught will be weighed by a third-party observer in each boat. There will be no size limit nor bag limit on Sunday and all fish will be immediately released after their weight has been recorded by the observer. The finals results will be tallied from the reports received from the observers.

All 15 places will be paid Sunday. There also will be a $20 “big bass” division with a 100 percent payback. Entry fee for the tournament is $200 per team if paid before Friday, June 27. A mandatory check-in will be held Friday at the Emory Fairgrounds where late entries also will be accepted.

More information on the tournament is available by calling Mike Harris at 903-485-3008 or Axton’s Bass City at 903-473-7224.
