Warm-weather months don’t normally produce many trophy largemouth bass in Texas but Choke Canyon Lake between Tilden and Three Rivers has emerged as an exception.

During two recent Bass Champs fishing tournaments at Choke Canyon, bass weighing 12.06 and 11.5 pounds have topped the 150-plus team fields, and several anglers have reported hooking and losing fish that size and larger.

The 12.06-pounder was caught by Matt Cannon of Troy on May 31. At last weekend’s Central Region finale, J.R. Bryant topped the competitors with a bass weighing 11.88 pounds and his partner. J.J. Bryant caught a bass weighing more than 10 pounds.

Bill Polkinghorn of Spring, who teamed with Charles Whited of San Marcos to win last weekend’s Bass Champs event with a five-bass catch weighing 28.40 pounds, said he hooked into a bass estimated to weigh between 13 and 15 pounds only to see the fish become unhooked within inches of their landing net.

The Bryants’ two big bass put them into a tie for second place with Matthew Hauschild of New Braunfields and Arlen Hauschild of Sequin with 27.56 pounds each.
