What are 172 common carp weighing 2,839 pounds worth? For Scott Townson of Hurst and teammate Tim Creque of Cincinnati thats the catch that put $6,000 in their pockets in a triple crown victory in the American Carp Societys Northeast Regionals on May 14-17 on the Seneca River near Baldwinsville, N.Y.Townson and Creque took home the $3,000 first-place prize with their 172-fish catch and pocketed an additional $1,000 for the big fish award with a carp that weighed 39 pounds, 3 ounces and another $2,000 for winning the tournaments coveted Big Four award with their heaviest four fish that weighed 134 pounds, 4 ounces.Jason Long and Dan Kelsey of Batavia, N.Y., placed second with 2,775 pounds, 10 ounces. Their Big Four fish weighed just over 117 pounds. We caught the fish on a bait made of grits, Townson said. This is the time of the year when the shad are spawning and laying their eggs in the rocks and places like that, and the carp go in and eat the eggs. We started off using regular corn but later started catching more fish on plastic corn. We began packing pineapple and cream-flavored grits on the plastic corn and thats when we started catching fish like wild. The tournament drew 41 teams from Romania, Hungary, Poland, Canada, England and nine U.S. states, including Texas, North Carolina, Illinois, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The anglers fished non-stop for 50 hours and weighed in more than 36,280 pounds of carp, surpassing the 28,544 pounds weighed in during the groups inaugural tournament held on the Seneca River last year.More information on the American Carp Society is available at www.acstournaments.com.
