A Fort Worth police officer shot and critically injured a man while responding to a reported business robbery in south Fort Worth on Monday, a police spokesman said.
Two officers were en route to the robbery about 1:30 p.m. when they spotted a green Ford Ranger similar to one possibly connected to a series of recent business robberies, said Sgt. Chad Mahaffey, a police spokesman. The officers stopped the pickup at McCart Avenue and Westcreek Drive and approached the truck from either side. One officer saw the suspect had a large pistol in his hand and was turning to point it in her direction. The officer "fired one shot with her duty weapon which struck the suspect in the left shoulder at an angle," Mahaffey said. The suspect drove through the intersection and stopped about two blocks away on Westcreek Drive before stopping in a small business parking lot, he said. The suspect, in his 30s, was taken into custody and transported to a Fort Worth hospital, he said. As of Monday afternoon, he was listed in "critical but stable" condition, he said.Police last week issued an alert for a serial robber suspected of targeting businesses in north and south Fort Worth. The alert described the robber, who used a weapon, as 35 to 40 years old with a bushy mustache. The getaway vehicle was a 90s model green Ford Ranger extended cab with a sliding rear window. Police did not release any details of the robbery the officer was responding to at a U-Haul business, 3450 Alta Mesa Boulevard. The officer has been on the force for three and a half years, Mahaffey said. The department does not mandate that officers take time off after a shooting but the officer may elect to do so. As with all officer involved shootings, it will be investigated by the department's major case unit, he said.Staff writer Mitch Mitchell contributed to this report.
