A mother is in jail and a father is on the run after both were charged in the death of their infant daughter, who disappeared two years ago, police said.

Selvin Alfredo Ortiz, 28, is accused of capital murder, and Sonia Calderon Ruiz, 30, is accused of tampering with evidence, said officer Joe Harn, a Garland police spokesman. Ruiz was arrested in West Texas and was being held Tuesday in the Dallas County Jail, Harn said. Police believe Ortiz fled to El Salvador after charges were filed Dec. 31, Harn said.

"We've not had any contact with him," Harn said.

The couple’s daughter, Prisma Ortizruiz, was last seen by family and friends more than two years ago, when she was four months old, Harn said.

The pair don’t have family in the North Texas area, and it is unclear why police weren’t contacted earlier, Harn said.

Police believe Prisma was killed in August 2006 in an apartment in the 1400 block of Forest Lane and that her body was disposed of near Joe Pool Lake in Tarrant County, Harn said. Ruiz and Ortiz moved to West Texas some time later, Harn said.

After receiving a tip from West Texas, investigators searched unsuccessfully three times for the child's body near Joe Pool Lake. Forensics experts told police it would not be unusual for little or no remains to be found after two years, Harn said.
